William
Shakespeare (1564-1616)
was the greatest writer of the English language. He wrote
both comedies, tragedies and also many sonnets. Many of his books were
turned into films. The most famous ones are ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Macbeth’,
‘Hamlet’, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The English
Renaissance was called “the age of Shakespeare”.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
was an English writer of a Victorian era. As a teenager he had to end
school and work in a factory. With his wife Catherine Dickens had 10
children. ‘A Christmas Carrol’ is one of the writer’s most loved books
which became a film a few times. Other famous works of Charles Dickens are
‘David Copperfield’ and ‘Oliver Twist’.
Geoffrey
Chaucer (1343-1400)
was an
English author, philosopher, diplomat and poet. He was famous for
‘Canterbury tales’, one of the greatest epic works of world literature.
Chaucer used English at a time when much court poetry was still written in
Anglo-Norman or Latin.
